ACC sues UP chairman Selim Khan for amassing Tk35cr illegal wealth

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday filed a case against Chandpur’s Laxmipur union parishad Chairman Selim Khan on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 34.53 crore and concealing information about his wealth.

The anti-graft body’s Assistant Director Ataur Rahman Prodhan filed the case with its integrated district office in Dhaka, said ACC spokesperson M Arif Sadiq.

Earlier on Sunday, the commission approved the case against Selim Khan at its regular meeting, ACC Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain said.

According to the case, Selim Khan amassed wealth worth Tk 34.53 crore beyond known sources of income. ACC found this while analysing Selim Khan and his wife’s wealth statements which were submitted to the commission.

The anti-graft body also found that he concealed information of Tk 66.99 lakh of wealth, Md Mahbub Hossain said.

he ACC official said the commission approved the case at its regular meeting against Selim Khan, who is also the proprietor and director of Shapla Media, and the commission will file a case against him very soon.

On April 26, a Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on Selim Khan following an ACC petition as the commission’s primary inquiry found that he accumulated illegal wealth.

Earlier, the ACC initiated an inquiry against Selim over his alleged involvement in an attempt to embezzle Tk 359 crore from the government in the process of land acquisition for the establishment of Chandpur Science and Technology University.

Selim Khan, a former president of the ruling Awami League union unit who was suspended later, is also involved in illegal dredging in the Meghna River and selling sand, the ACC official said.

There are allegations that a group of influential individuals bought nearly 62.5 acres of land chosen for the proposed university at a price 20 times higher than the actual price.
