A case was filed against the driver of the car that killed a woman after hitting and dragging her along the road on the University of Dhaka campus on Friday.

Jakir Hossain, the victim's brother, filed the case on Friday night with Shahbagh police station against the driver of the car Md Azhar Jafar Shah, who is a former teacher at Dhaka university former.

Confirming the matter, Shahbagh police station's Sub inspector Shah Alam told The Business Post that the case was filed under the Road Transport Act.

Police sources said a white Toyota car, bearing the registration number Dhaka Metro-Ka-05-0055, hit a motorbike at the TSC area at about 3:30 pm. Rubina Aktar, 45, and her brother-in-law were on it.

Rubina’s clothes tangled with the bumper and the car dragged her nearly half a kilometre. It was stopped by locals in the Nilkhet area of the campus. Locals then detained the driver and beat him before police rescued him.

The victim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment around 4:30 pm.

The driver, Azhar Jafar Shah, a former faculty of the Department of International Relations of DU, was sacked from the university in 2018 on the grounds of moral turpitude. 

The accused is now undergoing treatment at DMCH.
