The World Veterinary Day 2024 was celebrated on Saturday at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), featuring various events and active participation from teachers and students.

To mark the occasion, a job fair has been organised for the first time in the faculty in collaboration with New Hope Bangladesh, a multinational firm operating in Bangladesh, for the students.

This event was organised on Saturday as part of the biennial action plan of the current dean of the faculty.

Eight to ten students will immediately be appointed as Technical Officers of the company in the said job fair, which has created a great response among the students, and has been widely appreciated in all quarters of the university.

Dr KBM Saiful Islam, chairman of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine faculty, said, “The day is very important for us. This is the first time we are celebrating this day on a faculty-wide scale.

“Basically, free veterinary services, tree plantation and job fair for students have been organized on the day which has been possible with the cooperation of all teachers and faculty students.”

He added, “Job fairs are a special attraction for students. Many students of the faculty will get jobs right after completing their honors, maybe not even a day of unemployment after getting the certificate.

“Being able to take such an initiative is a joy and a relief for me as the Dean of the Faculty.”

Dr Md Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan, vice chancellor of SAU, said, “The day is important and significant. This day is being celebrated with grandeur for the first time in the faculty with the help of their dean with the help of the teachers and students of the faculty which is really commendable. Lessons should be learned from this day and planning how to make the veterinary sector prosperous in the future.

"Our country's veterinary sector needs to be further developed in the field of research. Veterinarians treat sick animals which is really a very difficult job. Moreover, we do not have any breed of our own that produces milk or meat. We have to pay attention to these too.”

To highlight the importance and significance of the day, the programme was first inaugurated by Dr Md Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan with the participation of Treasurer, Dean of Faculty, faculty and students in front of the faculty.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor, Treasurer and Dean of the Faculty planted trees in the ASVM faculty premises of the university in the presence of various department chairmen, faculty and students.

Besides, a free veterinary campaign was organised in the veterinary teaching hospital of the faculty where free vaccinations and medicines are provided along with other medical facilities.
