Actors Equity Bangladesh, the professional organisation representing television actors, is facing growing pressure from its members to implement significant reforms. Artists advocating for change have raised concerns about the organisation's leadership and operations.
In response to these demands, an emergency meeting was convened on Wednesday at a convention hall in Mohakhali, Dhaka. To address the issues raised, an interim reform committee has been formed, headed by renowned actor Tariq Anam Khan.
This committee will have a four-month mandate to oversee the organisation's affairs and implement necessary reforms.
While reform-minded artists have called for the resignation of the current Actors Equity president, general secretary, and other officials, the existing committee members will remain in their positions. However, their authority to make major decisions will be curtailed, with the new committee taking the lead.
The reform demands put forth by the artists include the official recognition of acting as a profession, the establishment of an action plan, a new registration system, career initiation courses, professional card benefits, a Reformation Act and a safe, healthy, and respectful work environment for actors. They are also seeking shift systems, overtime pay, date cancellation fees, and a minimum wage for artists.
The current committee's term is set to expire in approximately five months, during which time the election date will be determined. The new reform committee will address the outstanding demands after the elections.
The formation of the interim reform committee marks a significant step towards addressing the concerns raised by Actors Equity members and ensuring a more equitable and supportive environment for television actors in Bangladesh.
