Ex-secretary of EC Jahangir Alam remanded for 5 days

A court here today placed former secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat and Home Ministry Md Jahangir Alam on five days' remand in connection with a case filed over the killing of a teenager Abdul Motalib during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4.

Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, Belal Hossain passed the order in the case as Jahangir was turned into the court with a 10-day remand prayer following his arrest from the city’s Gulshan area this (Tuesday) morning.   

A 14-year-old boy Motalib was shot dead while he was taking part in the student-people mass-uprising in the capital city’s Dhanmondi area on August 4.

His father Abdul Matin later filed a murder case against 176 persons including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the arrestee Jahangir Alam with Dhanmondi Police Station.

About Jahangir’s arrest, Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told BSS that they arrested former secretary of the security service division of the home ministry and EC Secretariat Jahangir Alam from the city’s Gulshan area around 11:30 am on Tuesday.

Mentioning that several criminal cases have been filed against Jahangir with different police stations, he said, "We have so far got 10 cases against him and the number of cases may increase."
