The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has reduced the price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 104 at retail level for the month of May.

After three consecutive months of upward trend in prices, the commission slashed the price of per kg LPG to Tk 111.26 from Tk 119.94.

Following the price cut, a 12kg LPG cylinder will now cost at Tk 1,335, down from Tk 1,439, including the value added tax (VAT).

BERC announced the new price through a notification on its website on Thursday which came into effect from 6:00pm the same day.

The new price of LPG will rationally be applicable for other cylinders ranging from 5.5kg to 45kg.

According to the new decision, the price of centrally reticulated LPG has also been reduced to Tk 108.02 from Tk 116.70 per kg.

Besides, the price of auto gas used in transportation has been reduced from Tk 67.20 to Tk 62.21 per liter.

According to the Saudi Contract Price (CP), the price of propane and butane are $850 and $860 per metric tonne respectively. The new price is set for May considering the propane-butane blending ratio 35:65.

However, the consumers alleged that they cannot buy the LPG cylinders at exact prices as dealers charge higher than the government announced rate.

When asked, a top official of the BERC said they have taken an initiative to monitor the matter through deputy commissioners.

“The energy regulatory commission will take action as per the law of BERC if it receives specific allegations,” he added.

Earlier in March, the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder increased to Tk 1,391.56 from Tk 1,240. The price hike was also noticed in the previous month.

In February, the price of a 12kg cylinder increased to Tk 1,240 from Tk 1,018.
