State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has hinted again at increasing fuel prices in the country against the backdrop of rising prices in the international market.

The state minister came up with the hint in an audio message sent to the media on Thursday.

He said, “We have been observing a sharp rise in oil prices for about six to seven months. The oil we used to buy at $70-$71, is now $171 and following a rising trend.

“We have been saying since the beginning that we will go for an adjustment. Although we are giving subsidies now, I think we have to adjust the (fuel) price,” he said.

Earlier in June, the state minister hinted at the fuel price hike while addressing journalists at the Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka.

“The price of fuel oil on the international market has risen abnormally, causing Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to lose hundreds of crores of taka every day,” he said.

Every day, BPC suffered a loss of Tk 100 crore and so they had to take some responsibility, he told reporters. “That’s why we want to adjust the domestic price of fuel oil.”

He added that the neighbouring countries made price adjustments regularly.
