BSEC forms body to scan rumors on social media

The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission has formed an enquiry committee to identify those involved in spreading rumors on predictions of prices and undisclosed information of publicly traded companies on social media and other platforms.

In an office order, the stock market regulator formed a 4-member committee on Monday tasked with submitting a report in this regard to the commission within thirty working days.

The members of the enquiry committee are Rajib Ahmed, a BSEC director in the department of Management Information Systems, Md Moinul Haque, Head of Application Support at Central Depository Bangladesh Limited, Abu Nur Muhammad Hasanul Karim, the DGM and head of System and Market Admin of Dhaka Stock Exchange and Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Senior Manager of Surveillance Department at DSE.

The commission recently observed some deceitful activities on stock trading in social media platforms including Facebook, Whatsapp, Linkedin and Youtube, said the office order signed by Ziaur Rahman, assistant director of the commission.

It is necessary, in the public interest, to conduct an enquiry against the persons who are directly or indirectly involved in spreading rumor regarding prediction of price and undisclosed information through social and other media since January 2021, said the regulator.

The commission hereby orders an inquiry on the above-mentioned issues and enquiry officers will complete the inquiry and submit a report to the commission within thirty working days of issuance of this order, the order added.
