Vaccine optimism lifts Dhaka stocks

DSEX, the benchmark index of Dhaka Stock Exchange went up by 0.93 per cent or 57.6 points riding on a buying spree of confident investors amid the resumption of mass-vaccination campaign throughout the country on Tuesday.

Among major sectors, Tannery, IT and Ceramics experienced price appreciation while Jute and Paper & Printing sectors saw correction.

Turnover increased by 4.33 per cent to Tk 1669 crore where miscellaneous sector dominated covering 14.88 per cent of the total chart.

Of the issues traded, 129 declined, 212 advanced, 32 remained unchanged on the Dhaka bourse.

Meanwhile, the newly listed Sonali Life Insurance topped the losers’ table losing 6.36 per cent value following 440 per cent rise the previous trading day.

According to market sources, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission assigned an official to identify the reason behind the abnormal price soar of the insurance company.

International Leasing Securities Limited in its daily market commentary said that the Dhaka stocks bounced back profoundly after a single session of sell pressure amidst enthusiastic participation from bank sector investors.

The session commenced in a positive tone and closed in the same fashion as investors took fresh positions riding on the news that Bangladesh will receive 5.9 million vaccine doses under the COVAX global vaccine sharing initiative in July.

The relaxation of lockdown ahead of Eid vacation tempted investors which led them to take positions in almost all the sectors with some of the investors reshuffling their portfolio.

EBL Securities Limited in its daily market commentary said that easing of lockdown increased confidence among investors.

On Tuesday, Telecom sector bought the highest market capitalisation of 14.18 per cent or Tk 74,014 crore.

Banking sector took the second position with 12.92 per cent market cap and pharma took the third with 12.64 per cent market cap.

At the day's end, DSES and DS30 added 7.27 and 14.71 points respectively to their previous day’s levels.

The port city bourse, CSE, however, ended in green terrain. The selected indices (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) advanced by 103.8 points and 179.6 points respectively.

Of the issues traded, 165 advanced, 118 declined, 27 remained unchanged on the CSE.
