Sitakunda shipyard blast death toll rises to 2

Another man who suffered injuries in an explosion and subsequent fire at the SN Corporation shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda of Chattogram died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery early Monday, raising the death toll from the blast to two.

The deceased was Khairul Islam, 21, a resident of Dashar Kathi village in Kawkhali Upazila, Pirojpur and a worker of the shipyard.

Dr Tariqul Islam, resident physician of the hospital said, Khairul died around 2:45 am while receiving treatment with 80% burns at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Earlier, another victim, Md. Ahmadullah,38, died early Sunday and 10 other people suffered burn injuries in the explosion on Saturday.

Nazrul Islam, who brought the injured victims to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said that the explosion occurred while the workers were cutting a ship at the yard on Saturday morning.

The injured were initially taken to CMCH and later eight of them were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Among the injured, Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Abul Kashem each suffered 70 per cent burns, Barkatullah sustained 60 per cent burns, Anwar Hossain 25 per cent, Al-Amin 80 per cent, and Habib 45 per cent, he said.

The Ministry of Industries formed a committee to investigate the incident.

Additionally, operations at the shipbreaking yard have been suspended until further notice.
